🍜 Eating alone (혼밥) in Korea

Eating alone is common in Korea; there's even a word for it, honbap. A few tips make solo meals easy, even at busy spots.

Step by step

  1. Ask before you sitSome restaurants ask solo diners to order two portions. A quick '1인분 돼요?' (is one portion OK?) at the door avoids an awkward moment.
  2. Have a backup nearbyAbout 10% of Korea's roughly 170,000 restaurants offer single-person meals, so it's worth knowing a second option.
  3. Kiosk, or order with staffKiosks and table tablets are growing, but only 13% of restaurants used them in 2025. Point at the menu and say '이거 하나 주세요'.
  4. Easy solo bowls on the fan routeStray Kids-linked soup spots Pujuok (seolleongtang ₩14,000) and Hoseokchon (sundae-guk ₩10,000) serve single bowls and are open 24 hours.
